The business impressed the judges with its extensive sustainability agenda and commitment to making a positive environmental impact.
Aston Manor’s head of compliance and sustainability, Jamie Weall, said: “We are thrilled to be recognised twice at these awards for our programme of sustainability initiatives.
“Across all departments at Aston Manor, every colleague is committed to exploring and implementing innovative schemes that make a real difference. We have been delighted with the results that these projects have delivered so far.”
“However, the business will not rest on it laurels. It’s important that we keep investing in our programme and continue to lead our industry. It is through collaboration and the shared desire to see change in the way we operate which is enabling us to exceed on our targets and have a lasting impact.
“There were so many fantastic businesses that were showcased at these awards – so we are delighted to be recognised in that company. The evening really demonstrated why Birmingham and the West Midlands is one of the best places in the UK to do business.”
As part of Aston Manor’s sustainability programme, the cidermaker has substantially reduced its use of raw materials and consumption of fresh water. By investing significantly across the production facilities in Birmingham, the Midlands and Devon, the business has significantly reduced its CO2 consumption.
Aston Manor has pledged to send no waste in landfill sites by 2020. This is being achieved by sending its apple pomace, the remains of the apple after its pressed, to an anaerobic digestion facility, where it’s broken down and used as biofertilisers or to generate gas for energy.
Marc Reeves, editor-in-chief of Reach Midlands which publishes the Birmingham Post and BusinessLive, said: “Aston Manor Cider has been a stalwart of the city's manufacturing and business scene for decades and long may that continue under its new owners.
“With climate change and sustainability never far from the headlines these days, it's gratifying to see that a company striving so hard to reduce its impact on the environment can be recognised in this way.”
Aston Manor has been making cider in the Midlands for over 35 years. The company has its headquarters and production site in Birmingham, its state-of-the-art pressing facility in Stourport-on-Severn and orchards across Worcestershire and Herefordshire.
The two accolades at the Birmingham Post Business Awards is the latest highlight for Aston Manor in an award-winning 2019. Earlier this year, the business won the Large Business of the Year accolade at the West Midlands Business Masters and collected seven medals at the International Cider Challenge.
